Is there unclaimed bond money owing to you?
Hey Queenslanders! Don't Forget to Grab Your Unclaimed Rental Bonds!
Did you know you might be missing out on some extra money? You're probably wondering what we're talking about. Well, the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) has kicked off a campaign across Queensland to remind residents to claim their overdue rental bond payments (from previous tenancies) that are being held by the RTA.
You heard it right. There are over 114,000 unclaimed bond payments sitting idle at the RTA. And what's more surprising is nearly half of these unclaimed bonds are worth more than $300 each!
Claiming your money couldn't be easier. You can quickly grab your unclaimed bond payments by hopping on the RTA website and updating your details. If you want to jump straight into that process, the relevant link is at the end of this article. Otherwise, read on for more details.
Jennifer Smith, the RTA's CEO, voiced her commitment to ensuring Queensland's renters reclaim their unclaimed bond payments, something she considers a crucial part of the RTA's mission of supporting the renting community for the past three decades. Smith highlighted that the average value of each unclaimed bond payment is worth a whopping $454.99. If we apply some quick Math to these figures, it's clear that close to $52 million is waiting in trust to be claimed.
When a tenancy wraps up, the RTA usually refunds the bond to the provided bank account. But sometimes, due to missing or inaccurate customer details, the refunds don't reach their rightful owners. That's where the importance of keeping your information updated with the RTA comes in. It might seem strange to forget about your rental bond, but let's face it, moving can be a stressful and hectic time. The oldest unclaimed bond on the RTA's records dates back to 1990, so there's no shame in forgetting, especially when life is so busy. But hey, consider this campaign as a little nudge to check your rental bond status.
The RTA assures that they take the safety and confidentiality of customers seriously. So, when filling out the online enquiry form to check if you have any forgotten bond money, you'll need to provide some key identification details and relevant tenancy information.
The goal is clear: help Queenslanders reclaim their forgotten bond money. The RTA is joining hands with organizations such as the Real Estate Institute of Queensland and Tenants Queensland to spread the word about this campaign and reduce the amount of future unclaimed bonds.
